March in Minnesota can be unpredictable especially when installing a single ply system. We were very fortunate to have sunny, yet cool weather for the majority of the installation. By keeping the materials warm, the installation ran smoothly with organization and proper timing.

The roof deck on the new construction was a 24 gauge steel V deck. Three and one half (3.5”) inches of Atlas II ISO Board stock (R24) was mechanically fastened to the steel decking. The insulation was staggered for energy efficiency. Conklin’s Flexion 60 mil Single Ply System was mechanically fastened to the steel deck in a fastening pattern that conforms to UL I-90 wind uplift requirements. The membrane was attached to all vertical surfaces using Conklin’s Contact Adhesive. A combination of automatic and hand welders were used to weld all membrane seams. Skylight curbs, stacks, HVAC units, and drains were individually detailed to the new roof surface using factory accessories including pre-fabricated boots, stack covers and corners.

Solution: Conklin’s Single Ply Restoration System

• No tear-off required, saving on labor, time and dumpster/disposal costs
• Minimal disturbance to the property or the owner
• Restoration extends the life of the existing roof system

Project Specifications:

• WAC II cleaner applied at full strength to the approved Single Ply membrane at a rate of 400-500 square feet per gallon using a portable sprayer equipped with a .019 to .022 spray tip.
• The cleaner remained on the roof surface for 20 minutes prior to rinsing with water (high-pressure spray).
• All residue was removed and the roof surface was left to dry thoroughly prior to the application of a primer.
• Conklin Tack Coat primer was applied at a rate of 250-300 square feet per gallon and back rolled with a thick nap roller. The application took approximately 4 hours to dry (primer dry time is approximately 2-8 hours, depending on temperature and humidity).
• A 4” strip of Conklin Spunflex Roof fabric was embedded into Conklin’s Rapid Roof III base coat at a rate of 1.5 gallons per square and applied to the seams of the prepared roof surface. The fabric is relaxed, flat and wrinkle-free when it is applied by a roller starting from the center and out at 45° angles over the seams
• Once the coating and fabric application is dried completely, Conklin’s Rapid Roof® III top coat was applied over the entire field of the roof at rate of 1.9 gallons per square*. The top coat dry mil thickness was approximately 12 dry mils (24 wet mils).

Meet Stan Volkman

Stan Volkman has been a successful business owner and licensed roofing contractor since 1979. In fact, he has developed a very successful roofing company exclusively installing energy efficient Conklin Roofing Systems in the agricultural, industrial, institutional and commercial markets. He has supervised and installed over 4 million square feet of Conklin Roofing Systems nationwide.

In the early 1990’s, Stan managed over 1 million square feet of property for a prominent Minneapolis building owner. The exterior of the buildings as well as the roofs were improved using Conklin’s quality roof and coating systems. The properties have since been re-coated and maintained to the original splendor without the slightest bit of intrusive construction.

Warranty trained in all of Conklin’s roof systems, Stan is an 18-year Master Contractor with the Conklin Company and recipient of the company's prestigious President's Award. He has trained and mentored hundreds of contractors nationwide on Conklin’s Roof Systems including metal roof (MR) restoration, single-ply (PVC and CSPE), spray polyurethane foam (SPF), elastomeric coatings, fabric-reinforced, single-ply re-coating for aged single ply systems (modified bitumen, EPDM, PVC, and CSPE), Master Guard painting & coating systems, and Conklin’s cool roof systems (Rapid Roof III, Puma XL, Benchmark, Equinox, Rapid Roof HV, and Affinity). He assists Conklin's corporate trainers at their National Roof Systems training programs, and assists Conklin’s R&D department with field testing of new roofing and coating systems. In order to resolve regional warranty issues, Mr. Volkman has been called upon to act as a field liaison between Conklin and the customer.

Mr. Volkman holds memberships in a variety of trade, industry, regional, and national programs and promotes Conklin’s roof systems nationally through tradeshows, regional training programs, networking ,and organizational meetings and events. Stan is a three-term elected board member of the Minnesota and North Dakota Better Business Bureau, and his company was nominated for the 2009 Better Business Bureau’s Integrity Award.

Stan is now beginning to shift his focus more on his post-installation career, and that is why he has created The Contractors Alliance.
